Does it actuallywork?

CO2 mosquito trapping is backed by decades of field research from institutions that have studied mosquito behavior and control methods rigorously. The results are not marketing claims, they are documented outcomes from peer-reviewed studies and real-world deployments.

What to Expect

Your results week by week

CO2 trapping works by continuous population suppression, not instant knockdown. Here is what the research and customer experience shows at each stage of operation.

Day 1

Trap installed and running

Your GreenGuard USA technician completes the site assessment, places the trap in the optimal position, connects the CO2 tank, and sets the regulator. The trap begins attracting and capturing mosquitoes within hours of installation. Most customers notice the trap is actively catching insects by the end of the first day.

Days 3 to 7

Initial reduction in biting activity

As the trap removes breeding-age females from the local population, many customers begin to notice a reduction in mosquito activity in outdoor spaces during this window. The free trial captures this first phase so you can evaluate the results before committing to ongoing service.

Most customers notice fewer bites by day 5-7
Weeks 2 to 4

Breeding cycle disruption begins

The key mechanism of CO2 trapping is the removal of egg-laying females before they can complete their reproductive cycle. Within 2 to 4 weeks of continuous operation, the local population begins to measurably decline as fewer new mosquitoes are being produced. Biting activity continues to decrease during this phase.

Measurable population reduction typically begins at 2-4 weeks
Month 2+

Sustained population suppression

With continuous operation, the local mosquito population stabilizes at a significantly lower level. The trap maintains suppression by continuously removing females attempting to repopulate the area. Research documents bite reduction of up to 93% at this stage under typical residential conditions.

With Barrier

Maximum protection with barrier treatment add-on

CO2 trap customers who add the barrier treatment benefit from scent masking across the property surface -- removing the human-scent signal that draws mosquitoes toward people and amplifying the trap's effectiveness as the dominant attractant on the property. The combination produces the highest sustained reduction in mosquito activity.

The Science Behind It

Why CO2 trapping works

The effectiveness of CO2 mosquito trapping is grounded in fundamental mosquito biology and documented in peer-reviewed research spanning over 16 years.

CO2 is the primary host-finding signal

Mosquitoes locate blood hosts primarily by detecting carbon dioxide exhaled during breathing. CO2 triggers a host-seeking behavioral response at concentrations as low as a few parts per million above ambient levels. A CO2 trap exploits this behavior by presenting a continuous, consistent CO2 plume that is indistinguishable from a resting host at distances of up to 100 feet.

Targeting breeding females removes the source

Only female mosquitoes seek blood meals -- they require the protein to develop eggs. By targeting blood-seeking females, CO2 traps disproportionately remove the reproducing segment of the population. Each female captured represents dozens of potential offspring that will not be produced. Over 2 to 4 weeks, this disrupts the local breeding cycle in a way that chemical sprays -- which kill adults indiscriminately and temporarily -- cannot replicate.

BG-Sweetscent enhances species coverage

The Biogents BG-Mosquitaire uses the proprietary BG-Sweetscent lure in combination with CO2. This synthetic blend mimics human skin odor compounds and has been demonstrated to significantly increase catch rates for Aedes mosquitoes -- the primary vector of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya -- which respond less strongly to CO2 alone. The combination captures a broader range of mosquito species than CO2-only systems.

The Mosqitter Grand 4-way attraction system

The Mosqitter Grand combines CO2, radiant heat (mimicking body temperature), UV light, and the Mosqilure scent attractant to create a multi-signal host simulation. Field studies show that multi-signal traps capture a broader spectrum of species and achieve higher total catch rates than single-signal CO2 traps, making the Grand the preferred system for larger properties with diverse mosquito species pressure.

Population-level suppression vs temporary knockdown

Chemical spray programs achieve temporary relief by killing adult mosquitoes present at the time of treatment. Because they do not address the breeding population, adults from surrounding areas repopulate the treated zone within days. CO2 trapping creates cumulative suppression -- each week of operation removes additional breeding females, compounding the effect over time and delivering results that improve rather than reset every few weeks.

Independent validation and public health use

The Biogents BG-Mosquitaire has been validated in independent field studies conducted by universities, public health institutions, and research agencies across Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. It is used by public health departments for vector surveillance and control programs. The Mosqitter Grand was deployed at the G20 Summit in 2023 for perimeter mosquito control at the event venue.

CO2 Trapping vs Conventional Spraying

How the results actually compare

The performance difference between CO2 trapping and conventional spray programs comes down to what each approach targets and how long the results last.

What Austin customers are reporting

Add your own results here as you collect them from customers. The placeholders below represent the types of outcomes CO2 trap customers typically report.

"We couldn't sit outside without getting eaten alive. After GreenGuard USA's barrier treatment and CO2 trap installation, our backyard is usable again. The fact that it's completely pesticide-free was the deciding factor for us -- we have two young kids and a dog."
Lauren H. -- Austin TX
"GreenGuard is the only CO2 delivery company in Austin that actually shows up -- total game-changer. We have been running the trap for three months and the difference is night and day compared to the spray service we used before."
Jennifer -- West Austin
"We finally have a mosquito-free backyard thanks to their CO2 traps and refill service. As someone who keeps bees, I specifically needed a solution that would not affect my hives. This is the only service that gave me that."
Miguel -- East Austin
"I was skeptical that a trap would do as much as spraying but after six weeks of continuous operation I have not needed to reschedule a single outdoor event. The data speaks for itself when you look at what is in the catch net."
