A deceptively simple, scientifically proven system that lures female mosquitoes in to lay eggs -- and kills every larva before it becomes a biting adult. Stop mosquitoes at the source before they ever take flight.
The GreenGuard USA Mosquito Bucket of Doom Kit includes everything you need for a complete larvicidal mosquito control station, ready to deploy in your yard the same day.
Specifically sized for optimal BTI dosing and mosquito attraction. Large enough to maintain a stable breeding environment, small enough to place strategically around your property without being obtrusive. Includes a vented mesh lid to allow mosquitoes in while reducing access for wildlife and children.
Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis -- a naturally occurring soil bacterium that is toxic exclusively to mosquito larvae and a small number of related insects. Completely harmless to humans, pets, birds, fish, bees, and all other wildlife. Sufficient to treat the bucket for multiple weeks.
Vented lid to control access while maintaining mosquito entry, and an escape stick positioned inside the bucket so that any small wildlife or insects that fall in can climb out safely. Designed for households with children and pets.
Setup takes under 10 minutes. Once placed, the bucket requires minimal maintenance to stay effective throughout mosquito season.
Fill the bucket halfway with water. If using chlorinated tap water, let it sit uncovered for 24 to 48 hours before proceeding. This allows chlorine to dissipate, making the water more attractive to egg-laying females. Non-chlorinated water (collected rainwater or well water) can be used immediately.
Add a small handful of dried leaves, grass clippings, or hay to the water. As this material decomposes it releases CO2 and organic compounds that signal an ideal breeding site to female mosquitoes. This is what draws them in.
A small amount is sufficient -- roughly one handful.Add half of one included BTI dunk to the bucket. The BTI will begin working immediately, killing any larvae that hatch from eggs laid in the water. The slow-release formula remains active for up to 14 days per application.
Attach the vented mesh lid and position the escape stick inside the bucket. Place the bucket in a shaded area of your yard where mosquitoes are most active -- near vegetation, fence lines, or shaded beds. Avoid full sun, which inhibits mosquito activity and accelerates water evaporation.
Shaded placement significantly improves performance.Mosquito activity near the bucket may increase initially as females locate it and begin laying eggs. This is the trap working as designed. Within 2 to 3 weeks, as fewer adults emerge from the captured larval cycle, you should notice a measurable reduction in biting activity across the property.
Place in shaded areas with natural vegetation nearby. Fence lines, shrub borders, and shaded garden beds are ideal. Avoid open lawn areas with full sun exposure.
Keep the water at roughly the halfway mark. If water evaporates below that level, top it up. You do not need to change the water entirely -- the established organic environment is part of what makes it effective.
One bucket covers up to 4,000 square feet of breeding area. For larger properties or yards with significant mosquito pressure, deploying two or three buckets in different locations improves results substantially.
Always keep the vented lid secured. Do not place buckets where small children could access them unsupervised. The BTI is not harmful but the bucket presents a drowning hazard for toddlers.
If using municipal tap water, let it sit 24 to 48 hours first. Collected rainwater, dehumidifier condensate, or well water can be used immediately without waiting.
The bucket works by disrupting the breeding cycle, not by killing adult mosquitoes. Results build over 2 to 3 weeks as fewer new adults emerge. Do not judge effectiveness in the first few days.
The Bucket of Doom is low-maintenance by design. Following this schedule keeps it performing at full effectiveness throughout Austin's mosquito season.
Female mosquitoes seek standing water with organic material to lay their eggs. The fermentation of grass clippings or leaf debris in water releases CO2 and organic compounds that signal an ideal breeding site. The bucket exploits this behavior by creating what appears to be the perfect location for egg-laying.
Once eggs are laid and larvae hatch, they ingest the BTI granules. BTI produces proteins that are toxic exclusively to mosquito larvae -- they rupture the larval gut lining and kill them within hours of ingestion. No other organism is affected.
Because only female mosquitoes seek blood meals and lay eggs, the trap disproportionately removes breeding females from the local population. Over 2 to 3 weeks of continuous operation, measurably fewer adult mosquitoes emerge.
BTI has been used in public health mosquito control programs for over 40 years and is approved for use in organic agriculture. It does not develop resistance in mosquito populations the way synthetic insecticides do.
The Bucket of Doom targets mosquitoes at the larval stage. Paired with GreenGuard USA's CO2 trap program and barrier treatment, it creates a three-layer system that addresses the mosquito life cycle at every stage.
Lures breeding females in and kills larvae with BTI before they become adults. Targets the reproductive source of your local mosquito population. Works continuously with minimal maintenance.
Captures adult mosquitoes continuously using CO2 and human scent lures. Removes breeding females before they can reproduce and contribute to the next generation. The primary tool for population suppression in your yard.
Masks human scent across the property, removing the competing signal that draws mosquitoes toward people. Redirects mosquitoes toward the CO2 trap for capture. Available to CO2 trap customers only.
